Watch: The Columbia Law professor and co-chair of the Dean’s AI task force shares some of the ways that Columbia Law School is capitalizing on its unique strengths to address the impact of AI on legal education and lawyering.

From a deep dive into the 14th Amendment to a close examination of the Uniform Commercial Code, academic offerings for 2025-2026 include new seminars, lectures, and workshops on timely topics to deepen the intellectual experience available to Columbia Law students. 

Law and business students learn to combine legal expertise and financial trading skills—and face a Shark Tank-style final project. 

The annual one-week January Term allows for a deep dive into critical areas of law that students might not otherwise explore as part of their regular course of study. 

The one-week courses offered in January 2023 provided 2Ls, 3Ls, and LL.M.s the opportunity to intensively explore topics such as regulating cryptocurrencies, managing creative enterprises, and lawyering in the technology and venture capital space.

For 1L students and faculty members, the Beyond the Casebook lunch series provokes discussion about themes that cut across courses and spotlights issues that may get squeezed out of the curriculum.   

The first-year curriculum often strikes students as unrelated to the most pressing legal issues of the day. On a panel this fall, faculty teaching 1L courses “taught their subject” through the lens of the right to abortion, showing how their subject is critical to the legal questions surrounding a right to abortion, reproductive autonomy, or sexual liberty.

Social media. Race and racism. Economic inequality. The rule of law. This sampling of innovative seminars explores timely topics in the law.

Students can explore areas such as racial justice and constitutional law, work with leading scholars in international law, and even learn how to establish a legal practice.
