Section Description

This course is designed to learn skills and substantive law relating to startup and technology companies and then to apply those learnings at a startup and/or a technology company while developing in-house lawyering skills. Substantive issues covered in the class will include the regulatory environment for tech companies, commercial contract law, privacy and data security, the IPO process and intellectual property. The program combines an externship in an in-house legal department with a weekly seminar designed to build relevant professional and legal skills. Seminar activities will consist of lectures, discussions, negotiation exercises, guest speakers and written assignments, all of which will explore areas of the law that are integral to in-house practice at a tech company or a startup. Work experiences will serve as the narrative for these activities, in which, subject to workplace confidentiality restrictions, students will share observations and discuss the issues and problems that develop in the placements. Students will be assessed on class participation and attendance, reflection papers and oral presentation.
