Section Description
Students in this externship will assist survivors of domestic violence, in partnership with lawyers from Sanctuary for Families, in economic matters such as child support, spousal support and equitable distribution. Students will get experience in client interviewing, financial analysis and procedures in NY Family Court and Supreme Court. Students will also learn about modification procedures and in some cases, we will be working on contempt proceedings to enforce previously ordered awards. Where possible, students will represent clients in court under a student practice order. The weekly seminar will cover a range of issues related to domestic violence as well as provide practical support so students are prepared for their court appearances.
