New York, Oct. 18, 2012—The Hon. Richard A. Posner of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 7th Circuit spoke yesterday at Columbia Law School on theories of constitutional and statutory interpretation. 
 
His talk, "How I Interpret Statutes and the Constitution," was the latest installment of the Columbia Federalist Society's Madison Lecture Series on Judicial Engagement. Posner spoke via video conference on originalism and the theory of a “living constitution.” He also proposed his own middle-ground theory of interpretation that emphasizes common sense and analytic simplicity.

Other judges who are scheduled to participate in the 2012-2013 lecture series include 10th Circuit Judge Timothy Tymkovich and 3rd Circuit Judge D. Michael Fisher.
