Faculty Insight: Christopher Morten on Patents and Sharing the COVID-19 Vaccine
Professor Christopher Morten explains why the Biden administration has the right and responsibility to share the Moderna formula with countries with shortages of COVID-19 vaccine doses.
The speedy development, testing, and distribution of the COVID-19 vaccine owed its success to prior research performed and paid for by the U.S. government, says Associate Clinical Professor Christopher Morten. That gives the Biden administration intellectual property rights that should be used to share the formula for manufacture of the COVID-19 vaccine in countries that have struggled for access to vaccines made by Moderna and Pfizer.
