First They Came for the Students: AAUP v. Rubio

Oct 2025
30

Join us for a conversation with key members of the winning legal team involved in the AAUP v. Rubio case. In a major victory for free speech, the American Association of University Professors (AAUP) and the Middle East Studies Association (MESA), represented by the Knight First Amendment Institute at Columbia University, successfully challenged the Trump administration’s policy of arresting, detaining, and deporting noncitizen students and faculty for their pro-Palestinian advocacy.

Lawyers from the Knight Institute will explore the constitutional arguments that led to the win in AAUP v. Rubio, the implications for students and faculty at universities nationwide, and what this legal victory means in the broader fight against the Trump administration’s authoritarian attempts to shut down lawful protest and dissent.

Featured Speakers:

  • Ramya Krishnan, Senior Staff Attorney, Knight First Amendment Institute; Lecturer in Law, Columbia Law School
  • George Wang, Staff Attorney, Knight First Amendment Institute
