Section Description
The seminar begins with a reexamination of major traditions in international political theory and jurisprudence as seen through the eyes of classical and modern political philosophers both from the global “North” and “South.” We also consider the political writings of “Northern” and “Southern” politicians – democratic, populist, fascist and communist. We will discuss their insights into the issues of law, order and justice,: identity and legitimacy; peace and war; cooperation and conflict; intervention and independence and international equality and inequality. Students will prepare a question for each class and submit them prior to the relevant class. In the last quarter of the seminar, students will prepare an outline and discuss their papers with the instructor prior to handing the completed papers in at the beginning of the exam period. Papers should consider the insights of a particular philosopher or politician or should address the differences and similarities across philosophers or philosophies, focusing on questions that explore global issues.
