Social Justice Initiatives Hosts U.S. Supreme Court Roundup
Professors Sarah Cleveland and Kendall Thomas Join ACLU Legal Director Steven Shapiro to Discuss Past and Future Public Interest Cases.
New York, October 15, 2013—Columbia Law School Professors Sarah H. Cleveland and Kendall Thomas along with ACLU Legal Director Steven Shapiro peeled back the curtain on some of the U.S. Supreme Court’s most important public interest cases from last term and the upcoming session in the annual Supreme Court Roundup sponsored by Social Justice Initiatives.

The term that ended in June produced landmark decisions in cases dealing with the marriage rights of same-sex couples, the Voting Rights Act, affirmative action, and alleged human rights abuses abroad, among other issues. The current term also promises to be a blockbuster with the justices taking up abortion rights, campaign finance laws, legislative prayer, and the Chemical Weapons Convention Implementation Act.
In addition to providing commentary and analysis, Shapiro, who is also a lecturer at the Law School, moderated the Oct. 8 event. SJI Dean Ellen P. Chapnick introduced the panelists.
