New York, November 9, 2015—On November 12, Columbia Law School Professor Bernard E. Harcourt will be awarded an honorary doctorate from the University of Aix-Marseille in France for his contributions to contemporary critical thought.

The following day, after receiving the doctorat honoris causa in the company of five Nobel Laureates at the Soirée Scientifique d’Aix-Marseille Université, Harcourt will deliver a formal award lecture titled “Pénalité 2015,” a presentation of his research on the limits of current penological and criminological theories.

Harcourt, the Isidor and Seville Sulzbacher Professor of Law and director of the Columbia Center for Contemporary Critical Thought, is being honored for being, in the words of the award committee, "well recognized as one of the principal critical thinkers on penal law, penality, and criminology in the world."
 
Before joining the Law School in 2014, Harcourt served as the Julius Kreeger Professor of Law and Political Science at The University of Chicago, where he was the chairman of the political science department. He also holds a chair at the École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales in Paris, Europe’s leading social science institution.
