From Morningside Heights to Brussels and Luxembourg to Study EU Law

Columbia Law School Professor Anu Bradford will make Brussels and Luxembourg her classroom early next month when she takes 12 upper-year students to the European Parliament, the European Court of Justice, and other decision-making bodies, for an inside look into EU law and institutions.

Bradford, a Finnish-born expert in international economic law and EU law, has arranged for students to meet privately with top legal advisers, judges, practicing attorneys, politicians, and even the U.S. Ambassador to the European Union—who happens to be a Columbia Law School alumnus. During these sessions, students will engage with experts on a host of issues and challenges facing the EU, such as transatlantic relations, the Brexit, the digital economy, borders and migration, data protection, antitrust and more.

This year’s participants are an especially international group: Students hail from Australia, Canada, Cameroon, France, Norway, Kenya, Moldova, and the U.S., and share an unusually strong interest in EU law.

Now in its second year, the seminar—open only to students with prior study or knowledge of basic EU law—will again be sponsored by Cleary Gottlieb Steen & Hamilton. A number of the firm’s partners in its Brussels office will join the seminar for a discussion of EU competition law cases. Bradford practiced in Cleary Gottlieb’s Brussels office for two years, specializing in EU antitrust law. 

The trip will run from January 7- 16, 2017.
