Section Description
This course will cover special topics in Personhood, Identity, and Freedom in Legal, Moral and Political philosophy. Topics will cover: 1) personal identity and time (including moral responsibility over time, statutes of limitations, authority over future selves (advanced directives), the puzzle of pre-punishment, the rights of the dead, and future persons; 2) self-knowledge, self-authorship, and privacy/prediction; and 3) theories of the self (including puzzles for legal persons, corporations, informational selves, and the legal status of groups, posthumous persons, and AI.
