Section Description

This seminar will explore the legal, business, and ethical issues involved in music business contract negotiations, with a particular focus on the unique challenges faced by artists, songwriters, producers, and other music industry workers. Through a combination of case studies, guest speakers, and class discussions, students will gain an in-depth understanding of the legal frameworks and agreements that govern relationships between artists and their collaborators, record labels, managers, and other key stakeholders in the music industry. We will also delve into the ethical considerations that come into play for lawyers representing musicians in a transactional context often characterized by asymmetrical power dynamics.
