Section Description
This class examines the role of law in the international system. We will explore how international law is made through treaties, custom, and other processes; the roles of different actors and institutions in making, interpreting and enforcing international law and being governed by it; interpretation of treaties and customary international law, and how international law intersects with domestic legal systems, particularly the United States. The class will cover a range of substantive areas of law, including human rights, criminal justice, and the use of force and armed conflict. Topics will be discussed where appropriate through the examination of real ongoing or recent events. This course will prove highly useful to preparing students for more specialized courses in international law.
Professor Cleveland will be selecting students from the waitlist.
