New York, July 14, 2009 -- Thanks to the commitment of one accomplished alumnus, Columbia Law School recently brought the worlds of art and law together.

Richard Blumenthal ’63 sponsored an event June 30 at the New York Academy of Art in conjunction with its Summer Exhibition. Columbia Law School alumni – from 1950’s graduates to admitted students -- were on hand to view the 123 works from alumni and students at the Academy.

Located in Manhattan’s Tribeca neighborhood, the Academy is dedicated to the study of figurative painting, sculpture and drawing. The beautiful exhibition space served as an ideal venue for a private viewing of the contemporary artwork, as well as for mingling with fellow alumni, most of whom share an appreciation of art and a career in the law.

“As one who is committed to both the Academy and Columbia Law School, I am particularly happy to see the two institutions involved with each other,” Blumenthal said. “The event exposed the Academy and its artists to a perfect audience and gave my law school compatriots a chance to see some of the best figurative art being produced by emerging artists.”

Blumenthal, a prominent entertainment lawyer, most recently served as co-chief executive officer and general counsel of Independent Media Services, Inc. Since graduating from the Law School, he has been an engaged and active member of the Law School community. Blumenthal has also been a longtime supporter of the Academy, and serves on its Board of Trustees.

“This event is a perfect example of how our alumni are vital to creating unique and compelling opportunities to engage fellow graduates,” said Heather Malin, Executive Director of Leadership and Major Gifts at Columbia Law School.
