New York, September 14, 2015—Attorney General Eric T. Schneiderman today announced the appointment of Columbia Law Professor Tim Wu as Senior Enforcement Counsel and Special Advisor to the Attorney General.  Mr. Wu will advise Attorney General Schneiderman on technology, competition, and internet policy and legal issues.

“Tim provides an unparalleled depth of understanding of the intersection between technology and the law," said Attorney General Schneiderman. “His expertise in how legal rules can facilitate competition in modern markets is broad and deep, as is his commitment to justice and fairness.  I am looking forward to Tim’s insights.”

“I am honored by the trust that Attorney General Schneiderman has placed in me by appointing me to his Executive staff,” said Tim Wu. “I have great respect for the work that the Attorney General and his office have done.  The fact is, I’m looking forward to joining the fight for the consumer and the public's interest—a never-ending battle to be sure, but one that could hardly be more important than right now.”

Tim Wu, the Isidor and Seville Sulzbacher Professor of Law, writes about private power, free speech, copyright, and antitrust.  He also serves at Columbia Journalism School as Director of the Saul and Janice Poliak Center for the Study of First Amendment Issues. Wu coined the phrase “network neutrality” in a law review article, “Network Neutrality, Broadband Discrimination,” popularizing the concept that led to the 2010 passage of a federal Net Neutrality rule. He has made significant contributions to wireless communications policy and has written extensively about telecom and antitrust law.  His book The Master Switch has won wide recognition and various awards.

Mr. Wu has previously worked at the Federal Trade Commission during the first term of the Obama administration, and has also worked as Chair of Media reform group Free Press, and in the telecommunications industry. He was a law clerk for Seventh Circuit Court of Appeals Judge Richard Posner and Supreme Court Justice Stephen Breyer. He graduated from McGill University (B.Sc.), and Harvard Law School.

Mr. Wu will serve in the Attorney General’s office while on leave from Columbia.
