New York, Nov. 17, 2010—Two Columbia Law School professors and several alumni are part of a transition team to help New York Attorney General-elect Eric Schneiderman recruit his top deputies and provide advice on public policy issues.

Schneiderman, who was elected Nov. 2 with 55 percent of the vote, announced his 71-member transition committee Tuesday. It includes Lance Liebman, the William S. Beinecke Professor of Law, who has known Schneiderman for 30 years.

“He was my student long ago, so I’ve been close to him for a long time,” Liebman said. “He has been completely committed to public service for his whole career.”
Liebman is part of a committee to identify candidates for the posts of Solicitor General, who argues cases brought by the state in the top state and federal courts, and State Counsel, who is responsible for all litigation involving New York State, its officers, and its agencies.

Also assisting Schneiderman is Professor Theodore Shaw, who will focus on candidates with strong credentials in social justice.

Several Columbia Law School alumni are also on the transition team, including Julissa Reynoso ’01, Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for Central America and the Caribbean; and Avi Schick ’94, a partner at SNR Denton and former state Deputy Attorney General. They will serve as two of the three committee directors.

"With the goal of building on the Office of Attorney General's long tradition of legal excellence, we look forward to tapping into a wealth of talented lawyers and public servants to improve the lives of all New Yorkers," Reynoso said in a statement.

Schick added: "Attorney General-Elect Schneiderman recognizes the extraordinary talent of the lawyers and employees who have brought the Office of the Attorney General to national prominence and his administration will continue to meet the high standards they have set.”

Other alumni on the committee are:

  • Victoria Bjorklund ’83, a partner at Simpson Thacher.

  • Sheila Boston ’93, a partner at Kaye Scholer.

  • Bruce Green ’81, a professor at Fordham Law School.

  • Roberta Kaplan ’91, a partner at Paul Weiss.
