George Bermann Receives Another Award for International Arbitration Work

An expert in arbitration law, Bermann was awarded an honorary doctorate from a Peruvian university.

George A. Bermann, Columbia Law School’s Jean Monnet Professor of European Union Law, Walter Gellhorn Professor of Law, and director of the Center for International Commercial and Investment Arbitration and the Center for European Legal Studies, received an honorary doctorate from Peru’s Universidad Cesar Vallejo on June 14. Bermann, a world-renowned expert in international and comparative law, as well as EU law and international arbitration law, was honored for the body of work he has compiled during his decorated career.

At a ceremony at the university’s central campus in Trujillo, Peru, Bermann delivered a lecture on international arbitration issues, discussing alternative methods of conflict resolution and stressing the importance of impartiality to ensure equitable solutions.

“It is necessary that contract clauses establish the policies of how conflicts will be resolved if they are presented,” he said. “In that sense, there is nothing more transparent and objective than an arbitration process to resolve commercial disputes.” Bermann also delivered these remarks at two other ceremonies held in his honor at the university’s campuses in Lima (June 12) and Chiclayo (June 13).

Bermann’s most recent award is one of many he has received during his accomplished career. Last year, he was honored with a lifetime achievement award at the annual meeting of the American Society of Comparative Law. He also holds honorary degrees from the University of Fribourg in Switzerland and the Université de Versailles Saint-Quentin-en-Yvelines in France.
