Four Distinguished Scholars to Join Faculty

New Members Bring Expertise in Various Areas of Law

New York, May 14, 2012—Columbia Law School announces the addition of four distinguished scholars who will join the faculty July 1, 2012. 

Anu Bradford, most recently an assistant professor at the University of Chicago Law School, is a renowned scholar of international law and international relations. Jessica Bulman-Pozen is a scholar and teacher of administrative law, antidiscrimination law, constitutional law, and federalism. She recently served as an attorney-adviser in the U.S. Department of Justice’s Office of Legal Counsel. Jody Kraus, recently the David E. Kaufman & Leopold C. Glass Professor of Law at the University of Pennsylvania Law School and a co-director of the Institute for Law and Philosophy, is a noted expert on contracts and commercial law. David Pozen, most recently a special adviser to the U.S. Department of State’s Legal Adviser, brings expertise in several areas of public law, and in nonprofit organizations.

Anu Bradford, professor of law, is an expert in international trade law, comparative and international antitrust law, European Union law, international political economy, and international relations theory. She was the Visiting Assistant D’Atri Professor of Law, Business, and Society at Columbia Law School in the fall of 2011. Her research projects examine the influence of state power, domestic preferences, and international organizations on international economic law. Her article “Efficient Enforcement in International Law” (with Omri Ben-Shahar) was published in 12 Chicago Journal of International Law 375 (2012), and “The Brussels Effect” is forthcoming in 107 Northwestern University Law Review 1 (2012/2013).

Bradford earned her S.J.D. (2007) and LL.M. (2002) degrees from Harvard Law School and also holds a law degree from the University of Helsinki. After completing her LL.M. studies as a Fulbright Scholar at Harvard Law School, Bradford practiced antitrust and European Union law with Cleary Gottlieb Steen & Hamilton in Brussels for two years before returning to Harvard for her doctoral studies. She taught at Harvard College, Brandeis University, and the University of Helsinki Law School before joining the University of Chicago faculty in 2008.
 
Bradford also has served as an adviser on economic policy in the Parliament of Finland and as an expert assistant to a member of the European Parliament. In 2010, she was named a Young Global Leader by the World Economic Forum. She is a member of the New York bar and is qualified to practice law in Finland. She speaks Finnish, Swedish, French, and German.

Jessica Bulman-Pozen, associate professor of law, teaches and writes about administrative law, antidiscrimination law, constitutional law, and federalism. Before joining the Columbia Law School faculty, she worked as an attorney-adviser in the U.S. Department of Justice’s Office of Legal Counsel (2009–2011) and as a law clerk to U.S. Supreme Court Justice John Paul Stevens (2008–2009) and Judge Merrick B. Garland of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit (2007–2008). 

She received her J.D. from Yale Law School, where she served as editor-in chief of The Yale Law Journal and was awarded the Israel H. Peres Prize by the faculty for the best student note. Bulman-Pozen also earned an M.Phil. from the University of Cambridge as a Gates Cambridge Scholar and a B.A. summa cum laude from Yale University, where she won the Chauncey Brewster Tinker prize for the outstanding English major in the graduating class.

Jody Kraus is a noted expert on contracts and commercial law. His prolific scholarship focuses on the relationship between moral and economic theories of law in general, and contract law in particular. In addition to joining the Law School faculty, he will be a professor in Columbia University’s Department of Philosophy and will serve as co-director of the Law School’s Center for Law & Philosophy. Kraus was the David E. Kaufman & Leopold C. Glass Professor of Law at the University of Pennsylvania Law School and a co-director of the Institute for Law and Philosophy in 2011–2012. Before that, he was the Robert E. Scott Distinguished Professor of Law and Professor of Philosophy at the University of Virginia School of Law.  

Kraus is the co-author of a leading casebook in contract law and has published numerous articles in law reviews and peer-reviewed journals. He has taught courses on introductory and advanced contracts, as well as the Uniform Commercial Code, and he regularly lectures and consults for American and foreign attorneys on these subjects. He has also offered courses on the philosophy of contract law, legal theory, political philosophy, and philosophy of law. He is admitted to the Virginia State Bar and is a member of the American Law Institute, the American Law and Economics Association, the Advisory Board of Legal Theory, the Association of American Law Schools, and the American Philosophical Association.
 
Kraus holds a J.D. from Yale Law School and a Ph.D. in philosophy from the University of Arizona. While earning his doctorate, Kraus received numerous awards, including the University of Arizona’s Meritorious Teaching Award. In 1990, he joined the faculty of the University of Virginia, and in 1993 he was the recipient of the First-Year Teaching Award. He served as a Visiting Professor of Law at the University of Michigan Law School in 2009–2010 and at Columbia Law School in 2010–2011.

David Pozen, associate professor of law, focuses his research on several areas of public law and in nonprofit organizations. From 2010 to 2012, he served as special adviser to the U.S. Department of State’s Legal Adviser. Previously, Pozen clerked for U.S. Supreme Court Justice John Paul Stevens (2009–2010) and for Judge Merrick B. Garland of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit (2008–2009). From 2007 to 2008, Pozen served as special assistant to Senator Edward M. Kennedy on the Senate Judiciary Committee.  

Pozen received his J.D. degree from Yale Law School. He also earned an M.Sc. from Oxford University, and a B.A. summa cum laude from Yale University. While at Yale Law School, Pozen was a book reviews editor at The Yale Law Journal and an Olin Fellow in Law, Economics, and Public Policy. He was awarded the Scharps Prize for best paper by a third-year student (2007), the Townsend Prize for best paper by a second-year student (2006), the Cohen Prize for best paper on a subject related to literature and the law (2007), and the Gherini Prize for best paper on international law or conflict of laws (2006). Pozen is a member of the District of Columbia and Massachusetts bars. 
 
The addition of these four accomplished individuals brings to 32 the number of faculty members who have joined the Columbia Law School since David M. Schizer, Dean and the Lucy G. Moses Professor of Law, began his tenure in July 2004.
