Foucault 13/13: The First Seminar
The Columbia Center for Contemporary Critical Thought and the Society of Fellows in the Humanities at Columbia University Launch the First of 13 Seminars Reassessing the Famed French Philosopher
New York, September 14, 2015—The opening seminar of the yearlong series Foucault 13/13, hosted by the Columbia Center for Contemporary Critical Thought and The Society of Fellows in the Humanities at Columbia University, will take place tonight from 6:15 p.m. to 8:45 p.m..
Moderated by Columbia Law School Professor Bernard E. Harcourt, director of the Center for Contemporary Critical Thought, and Jesús R. Velasco, Professor and Chair of the Department of Latin American and Iberian Cultures at Columbia University, with special guests, Professors James Faubion, Rice University, and Nancy Luxon, University of Minnesota, the session will bring together distinguished scholars to discuss lectures delivered by French philosopher Michel Foucault.

Future seminars, which will follow the chronological order of Foucault’s lectures, will include conversations with outstanding Columbia scholars Sharon Marcus, Alondra Nelson, Gayatri Spivak, Nadia Urbinati, and others, along with important Social Scientists, Humanists, and Legal Scholars whose work touches on Foucault, such as Achille Mbembe, Judith Butler, and Lisa Duggan.
Funding for this event comes from the Columbia Center for Contemporary Critical Thought, Society of Fellows in the Humanities, Maison Française, Institute for Comparative Literature and Society, and the Department of Latin American and Iberian Cultures. Columbia University Provost, John Coatsworth, and the EVP of Arts & Sciences, David Madigan, have generously provided the funds to live stream and record the event.
