Firm Founded by Steven Epstein 68 Receives Award for Excellence
Epstein Widely Considered a Pioneer in Health Care Law, Considered 'Father of Healthcare Law'
New York, June 22, 2012—The law firm Epstein Becker & Green, founded by Steven Epstein ’68, has received the 2012 Chambers USA Award for Excellence in the Health Care category.
The Chambers USA Awards for Excellence are based on research for the 2012 edition of Chambers USA: America’s Leading Lawyers for Business and reflect law firms’ preeminence in key practice areas.
Epstein, who currently serves as chairman of Columbia Law School’s Board of Visitors, is considered a pioneer in health care law and has played a unique role in the establishment of dedicated legal representation for health care organizations. He founded Epstein Becker & Green in 1973, just five years after graduating from Columbia Law School, and after working in Washington, D.C., for the U.S. Department of Health, Education, and Welfare.
The firm has grown to include approximately 300 lawyers in nine cities, and with more than 100 attorneys dedicated to health care law, its is generally recognized as one of the leading law firms in the field. As the firm’s senior health partner, Epstein provides a wide range of health care organizations and providers with strategic guidance amid the legal challenges and opportunities presented by the rapidly changing American health care system. Chambers USA previously described Epstein as the “father of the healthcare [law] industry,” citing the instrumental role he has played in gaining acceptance of managed care as the most prominent form of health care delivery.
Outside his trailblazing professional pursuits, Epstein takes an active role in the Law School. He has been a member of the Board of Visitors for the past 18 years and has served as its chairman since 2004. In addition to teaching a popular seminar, Business and Law of Health Care, he endowed the Steven B. and Deborah L. Epstein Professorship at the Law School. In 2009, he received the Law School’s prestigious Medal for Excellence. David Schizer, Dean and the Lucy G. Moses Professor of Law, presented the award to Epstein, describing him as “a towering figure in the field of health care law.”
