COLUMBIA JOURNAL OF TRANSNATIONAL LAW PUBLISHES DEDICATED ISSUE ON THE REGULATION OF FOREIGN DIRECT INVESTMENT

NEW YORK - The regulation of foreign direct investment (FDI) - economic activity involving ownership with an element of active control by a foreigner - is the topic of The Columbia Journal of Transnational Law's newest issue, available now. This dedicated issue resulted from The Appel Conference: The Regulation of Foreign Direct Investment, held at Columbia Law School on March 27-29, 2003 and a year-long CLS foreign investment seminar taught by Professor José E. Alvarez. Mark ‘68 and Gail Appel sponsored the Conference with Professor Alvarez's support.

The articles, essays and notes in this issue present solutions to the lack of strong legal architecture for dealing with FDI. Proposed regulatory solutions call for the establishment of a new "World Investment Organization," the reconceptualization of the International Labor Organization, the creation of voluntary corporate codes and changes in the Unites States' application of the Alien Tort Statute. The authors also apply lessons from "the hands-on experiences of investors and their legal advisers" as well as from customary international law. Contributors include: Reuven S. Avi-Yonah, Irwin I. Cohn Professor of Law, the University of Michigan; Brian A. Langille, Professor of Law and Dean of the Graduate Program, Faculty of Law, University of Toronto; Tamara Lothian, Principal of the International Strategies Group and Lecturer in Law, Columbia Law School and Katharina Pistor, Associate Professor of Law, Columbia Law School; Andreas F. Lowenfeld, Herbert and Rose Rubin Professor of International Law, New York University School of Law; Sol Picciotto, Director of Research and of the postgraduate programme in International Business and Corporate Law at the Lancaster University Law School; and Todd Weiler, University of Windsor Law School.
