Ethan Torrey ’99 Named Legal Counsel of U.S. Supreme Court

New York, November 22, 2013—The U.S. Supreme Court has named Columbia Law School alumnus Ethan V. Torrey ’99 as its legal counsel. Torrey will assume the position in January.

Torrey joins the court from Boston’s Choate Hall & Stewart where he was a partner specializing in complex business litigation with a focus on insurance coverage and reinsurance disputes. Prior to joining Choate, Torrey worked at Ropes & Gray, as a special assistant district attorney in Massachusetts, and as a law clerk to Judge Leonard I. Garth of the United States Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit and Judge Mark L. Wolf of the United States District Court for the District of Massachusetts.

The high court established its legal office in 1973 to provide support to the justices on a variety of case-related issues and legal services to the court as an institution.

Torrey was a Harlan Fiske Stone Scholar at the Law School.
