New York, Nov. 2, 2011—
Columbia Law School graduate Parvan P. Parvanov ’11 won third prize in a writing contest organized by the North American branch of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators. The contest was associated with a symposium called “Border Skirmishes: The Intersection Between Litigation and International Commercial Arbitration,” which took place on Oct. 21 at the University of Missouri School of Law. The competition called for the submission of work from law school students worldwide.

Parvanov’s winning submission is titled “The Hidden Duality of the Summary Disposition of Claims in Investment Arbitration.” The piece discusses the recent jurisprudence of investment arbitration tribunals and proposes changes in the ICSID Rules and Rule 41(5).

The awards were presented by Gary Born, who chairs the international arbitration practice at Wilmer Cutler Pickering Hale and Dorr LLP. Columbia Law School Professors George Bermann and Alejandro M. Garro attended the presentation.

During his three years at the Law School, Parvan was mentored by Professors Hans Smit and Bermann, who supervised his substantive research and legal writing. While in school, he served as notes editor and later as senior editor on the American Review of International Arbitration under the supervision of the managing editor, Elizabeth Cooper.

Bermann is Jean Monnet Professor of EU Law, Walter Gellhorn Professor of Law, and director of European Legal Studies. Garro is an adjunct professor and a senior research scholar at the Parker School of Foreign and Comparative Law. Smit is Stanley H. Fuld Professor Emeritus of Law.
