Association of American Law Schools Meeting to Feature Columbia Speakers

New York, Dec. 23, 2011—Nine professors from Columbia Law School will participate in panels at the annual meeting of the Association of American Law Schools, speaking on a wide range of topics including financial institutions, immigration, and the legacy of the late Professor Derrick Bell. The meeting will be held in Washington, D.C., from January 4 to 8.

 

Speakers from the Law School and their panel topics are as follows:

 

Sarah H. Cleveland, Louis Henkin Professor in Human and Constitutional Rights

●   “Federal Courts,” a discussion about the impact of 9/11 on the federal courts.

 

Mathilde Cohen, Associate-in-Law

●   “Immigration Law,” a discussion that will compare immigration law in the U.S., Canada, and Western Europe.

 

Michael B. Gerrard, Andrew Sabin Professor of Professional Practice

●   “Natural Resources Law,” a discussion about strategies for adapting law and policy to the effects of climate change.

 

Abbe R. Gluck, Associate Professor of Law and Milton Handler Fellow

●   “Legislation and the Law of the Political Process,” a discussion about how the separation of powers should (or should not) influence the judiciary’s interpretation of statutes.

 

Katharina Pistor, Michael I. Sovern Professor of Law

●   “Financial Institutions and Consumer Financial Services,” a discussion about financial institutions and the rationale for their regulation.

 

Trevor W. Morrison, Isidor and Seville Sulzbacher Professor of Law and Co-Chair, Hertog Prog. on Law and National Security

●   “War,” a discussion about war and the use of force, focusing on Libya.

 

Carol Sanger, Barbara Aronstein Black Professor of Law

●   “Law and the Humanities,” a discussion about methods of teaching law and humanities perspectives as part of the core law school curriculum.

 

Matthew Waxman, Associate Professor of Law and Faculty Co-Chair, Roger Hertog Program on Law and National Security

●   “War,” a discussion about war and the use of force, focusing on Libya.

 

Patricia Williams, James L. Dohr Professor of Law

●   “The Singular Legacy of Professor Derrick Bell,” a tribute to Bell (1930-2011), the first African-American professor at Harvard and a world-renowned scholar, teacher, and activist.

 

The AALS is a nonprofit association of 172 law schools which seeks to improve the legal profession through legal education.
