Associate in Law Bart M.J. Szewczyk Named to List of Top Foreign Policy Leaders

The Diplomatic Courier Calls Szewczyk an Influential "Shaper" of International Law Discourse.

New York, September 18, 2013—Bart M.J. Szewczyk, an associate in law at Columbia Law School, has been named to the “99 Under 33,” an international list of young influential foreign policy leaders created by Diplomatic Courier magazine and Young Professionals in Foreign Policy (YPFP).

The list recognizes Szewczyk, whose current scholarship focuses on international law and U.S. foreign relations law, as a leading “shaper” of public discourse on an array of foreign policy issues, including the structure and practices of the United Nations Security Council.

“To maintain our global influence, and even potentially enhance it, we will need to improve our persuasive power and institutionalize it through more integrated partnerships,” Szewczyk said. “It is inevitable that U.S. military and economic resources will decline relative to the rest of the world over the next generation. But our aggregate influence need not diminish. And through innovative thinking, the U.S. can remain strong and be a force for good in the world.”

Szewczyk is a member of the Executive Council at the American Society of International Law, term member at the Council on Foreign Relations, and international editor of the Polish Yearbook of International Law. Prior to joining the Columbia Law School faculty, he practiced international arbitration and appellate litigation at Wilmer Cutler Pickering Hale & Dorr in Washington, D.C., taught as an adjunct professor at the George Washington University Law School, and clerked at both the International Court of Justice in The Hague and in the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit.
