Sophia F. Bernhardt is a staff attorney at Brooklyn Defender Services.
She represents clients in a wide range of family court matters including abuse and neglect proceedings, child custody, and paternity. Bernhardt previously served as a law clerk to the Honorable James L. Cott in the Southern District of New York and as a capital post-conviction attorney at the Office of the Post-Conviction Defender in Nashville, Tenn.
For four years, she worked as a criminal defense lawyer at the Equal Justice Initiative in Montgomery, Alabama, where she represented clients in death penalty cases, children who had been charged as adults, and clients who had been ill-served by the criminal justice system.
She received her J.D. from NYU School of Law in 2008, where she was a Root-Tilden-Kern public interest scholar and an articles editor on the NYU Law Review. Bernhardt earned her B.A. from the University of Chicago in 2001.
