Ramona Morel serves as the Director of the Consumer Bankruptcy Project, and as Advisor for DEI Initiatives, at the City Bar Justice Center, the pro bono affiliate of the New York City Bar Association. Ms. Morel’s experience includes assistance to consumer debtors with filing for Chapter 7 and Chapter 13 relief. Ms. Morel joined the City Bar Justice Center’s legal hotline after graduating from law school in 2004 and then joined the Justice Center’s consumer bankruptcy project when it launched in 2005. Ms. Morel was instrumental in elevating the services of the project to meet the demands for pro bono assistance by creating legal clinics in partnership with large law firms and in-house corporate counsel. Through a clinical model, Ms. Morel trains and mentors volunteer attorneys and law students to provide pro bono bankruptcy assistance to the project’s clients. Ms. Morel also produces consumer bankruptcy-related publications for the public, provides community outreach and presentations on bankruptcy and student loan debt relief, and co-administers the Bankruptcy Pro Bono Panel for the Southern and Eastern Districts of New York, placing matters for representation of debtors and individual creditors in contested matters. In addition to her bankruptcy work, Ms. Morel is dedicated to increasing diversity and inclusion in the legal field. In her role as DEI advisor, she serves as chair of the Justice Center’s internal DEI Committee and has co-created and co-presented award-winning DEI Continuing Legal Education presentations. Ms. Morel received her B.A. from New York University and J.D. from Brooklyn Law School.
