Nancy Tang

Nancy Yun Tang (she/they) is an Academic Fellow at Columbia Law School. Nancy's scholarship investigates how marginalized communities mobilize law across multiple domains to advance rights under restrictive conditions. A scholar of comparative law and politics, Nancy is broadly interested in family law, anti-discrimination law, Chinese law and society, gender and sexuality politics in Asia, and the intersection of immigration law and criminal law in the United States.

Nancy is a Ph.D. candidate in the Politics Department at Princeton University, with an on-going dissertation project on LGBTQ movement legal mobilization in China and Singapore. Her dissertation prospectus received the 2024 Kenneth Sherrill Prize from the American Political Science Association.

Before Princeton, Nancy represented low-income Asian immigrants as the Yale Mary A. McCarthy Public Interest Law Fellow at Greater Boston Legal Services. She was a 2017-18 Yale Fox International Fellow to the University of Cape Town, and a 2014-15 James C. Gaither Junior Fellow at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace.

Nancy holds a J.D. from Yale Law School and a B.A. from Amherst College. Her writings have appeared in the Journal of Democracy, Foreign Policy, Nikkei Asian Review, and the Yale Human Rights and Development Law Journal.
