Hannah McCrea

Hannah has been a public defender for fifteen years. She is currently a trial attorney at the Federal Defenders of New York, where she represents clients in the Southern District of New York in all aspects of their criminal cases, from presentment through sentencing. Prior to joining Federal Defenders in 2021, Hannah spent nine years at Brooklyn Defenders, in both its criminal and immigration units. From 2018-2021, she was a senior staff attorney with the New York Immigrant Family Unity Project, the Nation’s first public defender program for detained noncitizens facing deportation. Hannah has also worked as a fellow in the West Bank (Palestine) and Tunisia with the International Legal Foundation, training and mentoring public defenders in transitional legal environments. Before becoming a lawyer, she managed online communications for the Constitutional Accountability Center, a progressive legal think tank based in Washington, DC. Hannah holds degrees from Northwestern University, the London School of Economics, and Georgetown University Law Center.
