Michael Purpura served as an SDNY terrorism prosecutor, and then served in senior White House Counsel's Office and Justice Department roles under two presidents.
Professor Matthew Waxman and Mike Purpura will lead a discussion on government lawyering, legal ethics, and executive power, drawing on, among many other things, Mike's work on the impeachment inquiry and trial related to Ukraine. We will also discuss his very interesting role filing an amicus curiae brief in the Supreme Court on behalf of high-ranking military officers in Students for Fair Admissions v. President and Fellows of Harvard College and Students for Fair Admissions v. University of North Carolina, et al., arguing that the Court should uphold, based on national security interests, the constitutionality of the consideration of race in college admissions.
You may wish to just skim Boumediene v. Bush (2008) for some background on executive power and U.S. v. Nixon, 418 US 683 (1974) and Senate Select Comm. v. Nixon, 498 F.2d 725 (D.C. Cir. 1974) for executive privilege.
Light refreshments will be served. Please contact Brandon Sandoval to RSVP: [email protected]
