How can economic growth, social inclusion, environmental protection, and security be promoted simultaneously? How have Europeans risen to this challenge after 1945 ?

Through an analysis of European integration from 1945 to the present day, the book argues that the European response was to create both new institutions, the European Union, and an original framework for the governance of capitalism. This framework has combined neoliberal and regulatory policies, notably in the field of environmental standards, with a global impact through the “Brussels effect.”

Since Donald Trump’s return to power in 2025, the main challenge facing Europeans has been what the book calls “community capitalism,” that is, economic and political nationalism, particularly in the form of protectionism. Will Europeans be able to rise to this challenge and transform themselves into a more assertive power? Or will aggressive nationalism reassert itself and further divide Europe?

The book is available on the Cambridge University Press website here.

Laurent Warlouzet is professor of history at Paris Sorbonne Université and a former postdoctoral fellow at the London School of Economics (LSE) and at the European University Institute (EUI).
