The Columbia Law Review and the Brennan Center for Justice present the 2026–2027 Symposium, "The Constitution and Democracy." Bringing together leading scholars, policymakers, and legal practitioners, the Symposium will explore how the Constitution can be interpreted and reclaimed to strengthen the current state of American democracy. Through discussions of representative government, democratic memory, public education, workers’ rights, congressional enforcement power, and constitutional renewal, the event will examine the Constitution’s democratic promise and the challenges facing its realization. Featured contributors include Senator Sheldon Whitehouse and Vanita Gupta, former Assistant Attorney General for the Civil Rights Division of the Department of Justice, alongside distinguished scholars from across the legal academy.
