S. New York Civil Practice

New York Practice Seminar & Workshop is designed to introduce students to the rules regulating civil practice in New York State Courts, with emphasis on the practical, hands-on application of the rules. Students will achieve understanding and competence with New York Practice through targeted readings, class discussion, litigation drafting assignments, and litigation practice exercises. Where practicable, students will have the opportunity to visit with and shadow one or more Supreme Court Justices and/or Referees. Areas where New York's rules and/or practice diverge from federal civil procedure will be highlighted.

Coursework is focused on New York State's Supreme Court, the State's court of general jurisdiction, including practice in the Supreme Court's specialized Commercial Division. Students will attain a familiarity with, and understanding of, the practical application of the statutory and other applicable rules of practice in the Supreme Court. This will be accomplished by class lecture and discussion, in conjunction with the drafting of pleadings, motions, and disclosure documents, and by conferencing cases, conducting depositions, and arguing motions in class.

In class exercises and class participation, along with written assignments, will comprise student evaluations
