SJI Monday: Lawyering for Change - Using the Law to Advance Sustainable International Investments.
Monday, February 03, 2014 12:10 PM EST
-- 01:10 PM EST
Vale Columbia Center on Sustainable International Investment (VCC) Director Lisa Sachs '08 and VCC Senior Legal Researchers Lise Johnson and Kaitlin Cordes will discuss their work related to international investment and sustainable development, including investments in extractives, land and agriculture. This lunchtime event will present an opportunity for students to engage with the VCC's staff on their strategies to advance better international investment outcomes.
Lawyers at the VCC are working to shape the domestic and international legal frameworks governing multinational enterprises to maximize the impact of their investments for sustainable development. The extent to which investment contributes to sustainable development depends on the laws, policies and regulations in place, as well as the capacity of institutions to implement, monitor and enforce them. Very often, the legal framework is weak and imbalanced, leading to lopsided deals, misaligned expectations, human rights abuses, and environmental degradation, which are costly for all stakeholders. The lawyers at the VCC leverage research and comparative analyses to develop legal tools, resources, and approaches that help governments, communities and other stakeholders maximize the development benefits of international investments.
Non-pizza lunch will be served. Co-presented by Social Justice Initiatives.
