Jonathan Sacks ’00
Jonathan Sacks is Deputy Director at Michigan State Appellate Defender Office in Detroit. He started the Detroit Crime Lab Unit which reviews thousands of Wayne County convictions in response to the closure of the Detroit Crime Lab; the First Response unit, which prescreens cases for indicia of wrongful convictions and immediately starts investigations on appropriate cases; the Clemency and Commutation Project which prepares commutation petitions for qualifying former clients; and the community outreach program, where attorneys present to schools, churches, and other community groups on criminal justice topics. He also carries a caseload of indigent appellant clients for convictions ranging from first degree murder to serious sex offenses. Previously, he was an Assistant Public Defender in the major trials unit at the Defender Association of Philadelphia. He graduated from Columbia Law School in 2000, where he volunteered at the Harlem Neighborhood Defender Service and took the Prisoners and Family Clinic with Professor Philip Genty.
