John Halvey joined Bridgewater Associates in 2013 as general counsel.
He was a group executive vice president and the general counsel of New York Stock Exchange Euronext from 2008 to 2013. Halvey served on its management committee and was a member of the Euronext N.V. Supervisory Board. At NYSE Euronext, he was responsible for the global legal department, global government and regulatory affairs, and the global security department.
Prior to that, he was a corporate partner with the international law firm of Milbank, Tweed, Hadley & McCloy, from 1994 to 1999, and again from 2001 to 2008. From 1999 to 2001, Halvey was executive vice president of Safeguard Scientifics, Inc.
Halvey has written four books and numerous articles on legal issues and transactions. In 1995, he was named one of the 40 most successful people under 40 by Crain’s New York. In 2006, he was ranked the leading lawyer in his area of expertise by Chambers and Partners. He has been the subject of numerous other articles and features, including in Forbes, Information Week and Businessweek. In 2011, Halvey was the Legal Services NYC’s Corporate Leadership Honoree and, in 2013, was honored by Chambers and Partners with the award for Outstanding Contribution to the Legal Profession. He has won numerous other professional awards.
Halvey is a graduate of Emory University School of Law, where he was an executive editor of the Emory Law Review, the Emory University School of Business, and Tufts University.
