Lecture by Major General Amir Eshel Former Commander in Chief of the Israeli Air Force
Major General Amir Eshel is the former Commander in Chief of the Israeli Air Force (2012-2017). He also served as the Head of the Israel Air Force’s Operations Department (1997-99), and the Head of the IDF Planning Directorate (2008-2012).
Eshel, the son of a Holocaust survivor, led a formation of three Israel Air Force F-15 Eagles on a fly-over of the Auschwitz concentration camp in 2003. As it flew above the camp, Eshel broadcast a message to an IDF ceremony taking place on the ground:
“We pilots of the Air Force, flying in the skies above the camp of horrors, arose from the ashes of the millions of victims and shoulder their silent cries, salute their courage and promise to be the shield of the Jewish people and its nation Israel.”
