Judge Michael A. Chagares has been a judge of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 3rd Circuit since April 2006. He is the chair of the Federal Appellate Rules Advisory Committee of the Standing Committee on Rules and Practice and was the chair of the Case Management/Electronic Case Files Subcommittee. Chagares received the William J. Brennan Jr. Award in 2018 from the Association of the Federal Bar of New Jersey. Before taking the bench, Chagares was a partner in the law firm Cole, Schotz P.A. From 1990 to 2004, he served as an assistant U.S. attorney in the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Newark, New Jersey, rising to the level of chief of the Civil Division in 1999. He also has served as a law clerk to the Hon. Morton I. Greenberg, U.S.C.J., and has been an adjunct professor at Seton Hall Law School since 1991. Chagares has published various articles and is a co-author of the book New Jersey Federal Civil Procedure. He has lectured abroad on behalf of the U.S. Department of State to foreign judges, officials, and others about the U.S. justice system and the rule of law.
