Did you ever wonder what was going on under the hood for websites and applications? Wanted to learn how to code but just couldn't commit? We will be hosting 3 Coding Workshops in the upcoming weeks on campus! There are no requirements for any particular workshop, so don't fret if you cannot make it to the first class. There are also minimal requirements for attending the class, just bring a laptop (snacks provided)!

Our instructor will be Jeff Katz, a CLS alum who transitioned from being a corporate lawyer to a software developer developing child welfare software. He is now a web development teacher. He has taught over 200 students how to code, with students going on to work at companies such as Microsoft, Linkedin, and BlackRock.

He is concurrently teaching a series at the Brooklyn Library: Computer Programming for Beginners, the Unsure and the Afraid if you are interested! The tentative schedule is below, with each session taking approximately 2 hours.

1. Web App Programming in Python and HTML (10/20 2 pm; WJWH L104)

Introduction to how websites work, with a focus on HTML. At the end of class, students will learn how to design their own front end portion of a website using HTML. Students will understand how HTML fits into the larger environment of a web developer.

2. Working with APIs and Data Structures in Python (10/27 2 pm; WJWH L104)
Request response cycle with APIs and variables, functions, arrays, and hashes Students will learn how to use code to access an API and working with the data structures of an API like arrays and hashes

3. Data wrangling in Python (11/9 3 pm; WJWH L107)
Students will learn how to model their data with classes and objects How this data modeling can be used in web applications and for data analysis.
