What:
Ten-month Judicial Fellows Programme at the International Court of Justice (ICJ) in The Hague. Fellows assist members of the court in their tasks, including, inter alia, carrying out research, preparing case files and drafting various types of documents. Columbia Law School nominates students for the Programme, but the ICJ makes the final decision whether or not to invite a student to participate. There is no guarantee in any given year that the ICJ will select a student from Columbia Law School.
Who:
Open to graduating 3Ls and LLMs as well as recent Columbia Law School alumni (31 years of age or younger, this criterion may be waived).
When:
Application deadline is Tuesday, January 21, 2025.
How:

Two or three letters of reference, preferably from individuals who can attest to the candidate’s abilities in the field of international law. If you intend to request CLS permanent faculty members to serve as one or more of your references, please list their names on your application; it is not necessary for CLS referees to submit formal letters by the January 21 deadline (but external referees, and adjunct and visiting professors, should do so, if possible). These letters can be submitted separately to John Tarbet (contact info below).

A writing sample of no more than 15 pages. The sample can, for example, be from a previous publication, note or university paper, preferably on a topic of international law.

Students who are selected by the ICJ will receive an award of $40,000 from Columbia University to cover health insurance, travel, and other living costs related to the Judicial Fellows Programme from September 2025 to June 2026 (with the possibility of a limited supplement, in the event that the Court approves an extended term into July or August 2026).
