Section 003, Spring 2019
Section Description Provided by Instructor
For students who have completed their semester in the Prisoners and Families Clinic, the Advanced Prisoners and Families Clinic provides the opportunity to make a more substantial commitment to the work of the clinic and take on a greater range of responsibilities. Students in the Advanced Clinic will continue their client casework, take on additional cases, and deepen their engagement with the relevant substantive issues. Students will engage in structured reflection and consultation with each other about their cases; review and provide feedback on drafts of written submissions; discuss possible strategic and ethical choices that must be made on cases; and “moot” each other to prepare for upcoming court appearances. In addition, students will be responsible for selecting substantive issues for more focused examination than is possible in the semester-long clinic. Students will develop a set of readings and questions and will structure and facilitate group discussions of these topics. Instruction and class discussions will occur in a weekly seminar or in regularly scheduled meetings between groups of students and the instructor.
