Learning Outcome Goals

Primary Goals

  • Provide a deep and broad understanding of Japan's legal institutions, traditions, and actors. Help integrate knowledge of Japanese law into a larger understanding of Japan's history, politics, economy, and culture.

Secondary Goals

  • Expose students to: a) legal materials from an unfamiliar setting b) approaches/solutions to legal problems that differ from those in the US. Prompt students to re-examine the assumptions & institutional inclinations embedded in the US legal system.
