This course will engage students in an in-depth study of the constitutional rights to freedom of expression, association, and religion guaranteed by the First Amendment. Topics covered will include seditious, defamatory, and offensive speech; compelled speech; obscenity and pornography; symbolic conduct; expressive associations; time, place, and manner restrictions; commercial speech; campaign finance; the Free Exercise Clause and the Religious Freedom Restoration Act; public financing of religious institutions; public accommodations of religious practice; and state establishments of religion. Take-home exam.
