The Third Edition of my Legal Methods Casebook is required; earlier editions lack some of the materials that will be assigned from it. The Second Edition of Grant GIlmore's Ages of American law, with a foreword by Professor Bobbitt, is also available as an eletronic book, and it you wish the First Edition, that is an acceptable alternative.
Judge Katzmann's book is not required, since we will be doing relatively little work with statutory interpretation in this version of Legal Methods. However, the skills of reading and then interpreting statutes are essential to professional work in what is now our Republic of Statutes, and this is the best, and very readable, short work on the subject I know. Katzmann, the Chief Judge of the United States Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit, wrote it quite recently. Virtually every case that court hears will present a statutory (or regulatory) interpretation question since, today, the common law functions of the federal court system are highly limited. You would profit greatly from its wisdom.
