Caroline Voldstad has been teaching yoga and meditation for almost a decade, primarily at schools such as College of the Holy Cross, Harvard, and Columbia. After studying Philosophy and Eastern Religions in college she went on to receive a Masters Degree at Harvard Divinity School where she deepened her studies of contemplative traditions. While there she also had the pleasure of teaching mindfulness to elementary school children at the Cambridge Friends School. At Columbia Law, she is the founder and president of the Yoga Club. She is also the vice-president of the national Mindfulness in Law Society's Student Division and recently co-taught the contemplative space portion of the American Association of Law School's annual conference.
As always, the session will include a brief introduction to mindfulness practice; one or more guided meditations; and room for discussion of mindfulness in our life and work at Columbia and beyond.
The aim of the series is to practice and discuss secular mindfulness practice in ways that are equally engaging for people entirely new to these practices and for people experienced in them. Beginners are therefore very welcome.
Mindfulness simply means paying attention to whatever is happening right in this moment, and mindfulness meditation is a way to practice becoming more mindful. Studies have shown that mindfulness is an effective method of reducing physiological and psychological symptoms of stress by building our natural capacity for greater health, well-being, and focus.
We have been delighted to see so many of you there. We hope these sessions will begin a broader, community-wide conversation about mindfulness and how it might be relevant to our lives and to the law.
