Guaranteed Summer Funding (GSF)

Your guide to funding your summer work in public interest.

In 2020, students are eligible to earn:

  • 1L (40 hours/week for eight weeks): $21/hr (pre-tax)
  • 2L (40 hours/week for 10 weeks): $21/hr (pre-tax)

Note: You must meet all deadlines and requirements of the Guaranteed Summer Funding (GSF) Program in order to receive funding.

How to Qualify for GSF

1. Register
Registration is open on LawNet from October 8 to November 30. You must register for GSF even if you also submit or plan to submit a Statement of Interest for the Human Rights Internship Program.

2. Attend GSF 1L Mandatory Sessions

  • Developing Your Legal Résumé (online or in person) on September 24
  • Job Search Strategies & Crafting Your Cover Letter on October 10
  • Interviewing for Public Interest Jobs on November 6 or November 7

Email GSFHelp if you are unable to attend a mandatory session.

3. Complete the FAFSA
Submit the 2020–2021 FAFSA by January 10 if you wish to participate in GSF.

  • All U.S. permanent residents and citizens must complete the FAFSA.
  • Designate Columbia University (code: 002707) as the recipient school.

The FAFSA uses your 2018 federal tax data (if applicable). Your parent’s data is not required.

4. Secure a qualifying public interest or public service internship 

2019–2020 Dates

October 8-November 30: Register for GSF on LawNet 

October 1–January 10: Complete your 2020-2021 FAFSA  

November 30: Human Rights Internship Program (HRIP) Statement of Interest due

December 1–January 16: Register for the PILC Fair by 11:59 a.m. on January 16

March 23: Add your placement to LawNet

April 1: Students with confirmed placements receive Columbia Law School HR hiring paperwork

April 1-8: Submit HR hiring paperwork
Complete your I-9 form and verify your ID at 210 Kent Hall

April 1: Catalyst Public Service Fellowship applications due

April 8: Deadline to withdraw from GSF

April 13: Venable and Justice Stevens Fellowship applications due

May 18: Complete the GSF Summer Contact Form

June 5: Submit your first online biweekly time sheet to receive your first paycheck on June 12
