Communicating With Graduate Legal Studies
We look forward to receiving your application and learning more about you. We will send each applicant, by email, the following information regarding her or his application:
- Confirmation that we have received your online application and a link to our online Application Status online page, where you can check whether we have received your application components; and
- Notification that your application is complete.
We aim to send the completion notification email to all applicants by the end of January. As we move through the application process, due to the large volume of applications we receive, it is not possible for the Graduate Legal Studies staff to report on the progress of applications or the receipt of specific documents as such requests slow the processing time of applications. As a substitute, we encourage you to check the status of your application documents online.
In order to be sensitive to all cultures and identities, we will address all official application correspondence to your first and last name.
We send all admission decisions by email. Offers of admission are also sent in writing, via courier. Please be sure to provide us with a valid email address and a physical address for the courier delivery (we do not deliver admission materials to post office boxes), and to update that information as necessary. Many companies have put up firewalls which block our email messages. Therefore, we recommend that you use a personal email account (such as gmail, hotmail, or yahoo) or speak with your employer’s IT department to make sure that messages from Columbia Law School will not be blocked. All decisions are sent from [email protected].
Admission decisions are made on a rolling basis, in most cases no later than late April. Rolling admissions means that we evaluate applications randomly; the date you submitted your application often has no bearing on when you will receive a decision. Some candidates will have a decision in early January, others in late April. If you have not yet received a decision, it most likely means that the Committee simply has not yet reviewed your application (so you should not worry!). We strive to give every candidate an answer by the end of April.
You can find answers to many of your questions under the Frequently Asked Questions section of this website. Please address all other inquiries by email to [email protected]. We will try to respond to all inquiries within two business days.
