The Honorable Robert Sack
The Honorable Robert Sack was appointed to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit in 1998.
Judge Sack received his B.A. from the University of Rochester in 1960 and his LL.B. from Columbia Law School in 1963. Following a clerkship with Judge Arthur Lane of the U.S. District Court for the District of New Jersey, Judge Sack joined Patterson, Belknap & Webb. In 1974, he took time from his practice to serve as associate special counsel and senior associate special counsel for the House Judiciary Committee’s impeachment inquiry. In 1986, Judge Sack joined the New York office of Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher as a partner, a position in which he remained until his judicial appointment. His practice focused on national and international press law.
Judge Sack is the author of the soon-to-be-released fourth edition of Sack on Defamation: Libel, Slander, and Related Problems.
Judge Sack is a member of the Board of Visitors of Columbia Law School, where he also serves as a lecturer-in-law. He was Columbia Law School’s commencement speaker in 2007. In 2008, he was awarded the Federal Bar Council’s Learned Hand Medal for Excellence in Federal Jurisprudence.
