Columbia Law School has thousands of students and alums who work or have worked in government at the federal, state and local levels. Aside from our vast network of government lawyers, SJI offers several programs designed to prepare interested students for successful and rewarding careers in public service.

The National State Attorneys General Program is a legal research, education-and-policy center that examines the implications of the jurisprudence of state attorneys general. Working closely with attorneys general, academics and other members of the legal community, the Program is active in the development and dissemination of legal information that state prosecutors are able to use in the carrying out of their civil and criminal responsibilities.

Launched in Fall 2010, the Externship on the Federal Government in D.C. offers the opportunity for select 3Ls to work in federal government agencies in the nation's capital for a full term. This unique experiential learning opportunity is by application only. Government externships on the CLS campus open to 2L and 3L students include the Federal Prosecution Externship, the Externship at the United Nations, and the New York City Law Department Externship. See the Externship section for more details.

SJI also programs the CLS in D.C. Summer Breakfast Club Series, which offers current students, admitted students, and alums the opportunity to network and learn about lawyering work at various agencies and offices in Washington.
