Welcome Letter from Ira M. Millstein
Dear friends of the Millstein Center,
Welcome to the 2014 Millstein Governance Forum!
This year we are hosting the Ninth Annual Forum – and the Second Annual Forum since moving to our new home at Columbia Law School.
The theme of this year’s Forum is “The State of Corporate Governance.” Our aim is to promote critical debate and robust dialogue on the key issues facing all of us who are engaged in, or affected by, developments in the capital markets. There we will be four plenary sessions and six focus group sessions. The plenary sessions will focus on (1) the current state of affairs of capital markets; (2) the state of – and developments related to – institutional investors, including traditional, activist, and others; and (3) the state of the corporation and how recent changes in the capital market and in corporate ownership affect significant corporate decision-making at the Board and management levels, relating to the sustainability of the corporation.
The Breakout Groups, as always, will attempt to drill-down on many of the diverse and important issues of corporate governance - the changing strategies of hedge funds and private equity, global governance standards and new global governance developments, proxy season updates, board diversity and independent directors, and the business model for corporate citizenship. As always, there will also be plenty of opportunities for networking, including the Forum Reception and Gala Dinner.
We express our enormous gratitude to our many sponsors, partners, and friends, who continue to lend their support to the Center – and without whom the Forum would not be possible. These include our Advisory Board, the Dean and Law School Faculty and Staff, Deloitte LLP, as well as the CFA Institute, IRRC Institute, Weil, Gotshal & Manges, Broadridge, and others.
We look forward to seeing you at the Forum, along with our many other friends and colleagues representing institutional investors, corporate leadership, regulators, academia, corporate governance advisors, ratings agencies, executive search firms and the many other experts and service providers around the world comprising the corporate governance community.
We are excited to debate with – and learn from – you on these critical matters and hope you find the discussions as worthwhile and informative as we always do.
Please enjoy the 2014 Millstein Governance Forum!
